Two aspiring teachers are on their way to becoming teachers, thanks to the Dream2Teach Scholarship Fund and MySchool supporters who care about education.
Two aspiring teachers will begin their journey to become teachers this year, thanks to the Dream2Teach Scholarship Fund. The recipients, Ronel Tsoute from Luckhoff in Bloemfontein and Timone Daniel from Vredendal in the Western Cape, are the first to receive the scholarships that will cover their tuition fees over their four years of intensive study. Along with the fees, both Timone and Ronel will benefit from the Fund’s holistic approach that includes leadership development, holistic wellness and academic support, as well as mentorship and fellows programmes.
The Dream2Teach Scholarship Fund was set up to enable consumers who care about education to make a real difference in helping to address the teacher shortage crisis in South Africa. Although around 15 000 new teachers qualify each year, the country needs 22 000 new graduates to cover the growing number of school-going children and retiring teachers. While there is a large pool of matriculants who achieve great results at school, many are unable to study further because of high tertiary education costs – usually well beyond their families’ means.
Amongst them are young people, like Ronel and Timone, who have felt the calling to become teachers: “I want to be that kind of teacher who always inspires my learners,” says Ronel, “I want to make sure my learners make it in life and help however I can – even when it is something personal. I aim to be a successful teacher who can help my class achieve a 100% pass rate”.
The partnership between the Dream2Teach Scholarship Fund and the Make A Difference Leadership Foundation means Timone and Ronel will begin a journey in high quality tertiary education to realise their teaching dreams. “We congratulate these first Dream2Teach scholars and welcome them into our programme,” says MAD co-founder, Francois Pienaar, “They have made it through our stringent selection processes and have impressed the selectors with their potential to not only qualify as the outstanding teachers South Africa needs so badly, but to become good leaders in their community and our country”.
This year, Ronel will begin her studies to become a Foundation Phase teacher, while Timone’s focus is on becoming a Senior Phase Grade 11 to 12 English Literacy educator. Since its launch, the Dream2Teach Scholarship Fund has gained more than 1400 supporters who nominated the fund as their beneficiary and swipe their cards in store to raise funds, at no cost to them.
“What’s important to note,” says Helene Brand, Marketing and CSI Manager for MySchool, “is that the impact of one dedicated teacher affects generation after generation of children. By fulfilling their dreams, Ronel and Timone have the potential to impact positively on many thousands of learners”.
Currently, the fund needs 1700 supporters to swipe each month to enable one year of scholarship.
